What can I expect?

As the day of Figaro and Susanna's wedding arrives, it becomes clear that their master, Count Almaviva, has a plan to seduce Susanna before the ceremony can take place. Susanna and Figaro conspire with the forsaken Countess to outwit her husband and teach him a lesson in fidelity. But when the teenage Cherubino involves himself in their plans, their relationships have to pass a series of tests through confusing twists and turns.

The opera is based on the French play, The Mad Day, or The Marriage of Figaro, which premiered in 1784. The play was banned in France and also in Vienna, when Mozart began working on the opera in 1785, alongside Lorenzo Da Ponte. Da Ponte also wrote the libretto for Mozart's operas Don Giovanni and Così fan tutte. Despite protests from other composers, The Marriage of Figaro premiered in Vienna on the 1st of May in 1786. But when the city did not appreciate it, the opera premiered in Prague in 1787 - and it became a massive success.

In The Marriage of Figaro the servants are the leading roles, which was very different at the time of its premiere. Today the opera is known as a masterpiece that reveals so much about the human condition through wit, grace and joyous musical invention. ENO Music Director Martyn Brabbins conducts this second revival of Director Fiona Shaw’s critically acclaimed production!
